The 1970s oil crisis and the several international crises which have occurred during the last decade have demonstrated that the dependency on oil and natural gas as sources of energy has to be minimized as much as possible. This is the reason that R&D activities related to energy resources continue to expand rapidly in all developed countries. In the belief that research on energy resources and energy conversion technologies would be beneficial to increase knowledge and awareness in the field, CEKAM was established in 2005 at Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University. It is an interdisciplinary centre covering six different disciplines of three different faculties, namely the Physics, Chemistry and Geography Departments (Faculty of Arts and Sciences), Geophysics and Geological Engineering Departments (Faculty of Engineering) and Agriculture Machines Department (Faculty of Agriculture Engineering).

The aims of the centre are: to conduct interdisciplinary research on energy-related scientific and technological applications; to investigate methods of solving energy problems and to develop proposals and implement them in accordance with this aim; to publish, educate, consult, develop projects, and produce results as well as to conduct studies. In this context, several working groups have been established at the centre: the Energy Policy Group, the Solar Energy Group, the Flow Regime Energy Group, the Fossil Fuels Energy Group, the Geothermal Energy Group, and the Biomass Energy Group.

The Centre is a tribute to the Turkish and Australian soldiers that fought during the Çanakkale Wars/Gallipoli Campaign in 1915. We at the Centre believe that those heroes offered a rare gift to this and future generations, a legacy of inspiration through their unwavering commitment to the values of honour, respect, bravery, comradeship and love of country. The Centre is also a tribute to a leader of extraordinary vision, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. His words to the mothers of the fallen soldiers, which continue to be the centerpiece of each Anzac Day ceremony, speak to the hearts of all who hear them - of respect, compassion, reconciliation, peace and friendship. The Centre, its members and supporters find in those words, and in the inspirational legacy of those soldiers, a call to our inner spirit to work tirelessly for peace and strengthen the special and enduring friendship between Turkey and Australia based on our shared history.

With a view to the Centenary of the Çanakkale Wars/Gallipoli Landings, the Centre is dedicated to keeping alive these ideals through a widely based youth, academic and community exchange, and dialogue and cooperation. Furthermore, we recognize that there is substantial work to be undertaken before March/April 2015 in order to strength and broaden the friendship between our nations, particularly with a focus on young people, to offer a fitting tribute to the sacrifice of those heroes.
